Maria Christou
Maria Christou is a visual artist whose work is informed by both personal and universal concerns. Her creative process has persistently alternated between the mediums of photography and collage. Maria’s current project explores time through the lens of distorted and vanishing memories and brings into sharp focus the ramifications in the way we, as human beings experience manipulated, faded, and lost memories both on a personal level and as a collective.
Maria has been in a number of solo exhibitions and in numerous group shows both nationally and internationally. Maria has been a finalist in several awards including; The Art on the Rocks project two years in a row and the Fisher’s ghost art award for four years in a row, while in 2002 she was awarded the Circus Solarus encouragement award and in the same year she also received the Denise Hickey studio residency in Paris from the Art Gallery of NSW. Maria was back at the Cite International des Arts in 2013 through a French cultural residency program.
Maria’s art work is in both private and corporate collections. She has a Bachelor of Visual Arts (honours) from Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University and a Diploma of Fine Arts from the National Art School
