My painting is figurative, yet abstract and thickly textured. I paint mainly in oils and acrylics on canvas. I use the strength of colour to explore interests in classical mythology such as Venus and the theatrical figure of the Harlequin.
In August 2017 Anna held a solo exhibition at Janet Clayton gallery in Paddington called "HARLEQUIN ANIMALIA". In this exhibition Anna focuses on both the comic Harlequin whose origins are in the late 16th century and animals. Animals are a recurring theme in Wheeler's paintings. Wheeler has frequently painted the goat and cow. In this exhibition Anna introduced more animals including the African zebra, buffalo and elephant. She loves the pattern of the zebra and the boldness of the shape of the buffalo head with its strong horns.
